“THE DDU” – The Digital Democracy Upgrade
(Democracy Down Under)
WHAT DOES IT DO?
Before you read other details below of this skeleton description, please watch THE-DDU video and let Scott Dagoss give you a clear description.
🎥 Watch THE-DDU Video
- Gives Australia a "VOICE" – An opportunity to express opinions through a plebiscite-style platform. MPs can ask one Yes/No question per month relating to their electorate or a national issue. Registered voters can respond.
- The demographic breakdown of results will show ages, genders, employment and marital status, location, and cultural backgrounds, ensuring that all minorities and groups have a voice in numbers.
- Indigenous Australians would benefit greatly by having their perspectives quantified, allowing MPs to understand how policies truly impact communities in real time.
1. EDUCATE THE PEOPLE.
The app will educate the public on the fundamentals of Parliament in layman’s terms, featuring diagrams, tutorials, and easy-to-use resources on a user-friendly platform.
2. PROFILE PAGE
- The app will feature detailed profiles of all 226 MPs in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
- Example: Click "Minister for Health" – View details about Mark Butler (name, age, background, time in government, electorate, achievements, and policies).
- Key Features:
- 💰 Budget Allocations – How much was allocated to their portfolio?
- 📋 Current Projects – What are their objectives? Are they on time and on budget?
- 💳 Expenditure Card – MPs’ business expenses, travel, accommodations, and event costs will be public and audited to prevent misuse of taxpayer funds.
- 🔍 Transparency & Accountability – Australians will have access to real-time updates on spending, targets, and political commitments.
- ✅ MP Engagement – Each MP will have the opportunity to ask their electorate a Yes/No question monthly on their profile page, ensuring direct public input on policies and lawmaking.
DEMOGRAPHIC DATA COLLECTION
- The Census could become obsolete. If adopted by the government, THE-DDU could serve as an accurate, real-time data hub.
- How it works:
- 🔒 Users register once, linked to the electoral roll (to prevent multiple sign-ups or fraudulent accounts).
- No banking or private financial details required.
- Information collected includes name, age, gender, marital and employment status, electoral area, ethnicity, religion, and minority group identifications.
- Public Responses:
- Feedback is demographically sorted (e.g., young people say this, retirees say that, men think this, LGBTQ+ groups feel that, etc.).
- Provides MPs with immediate, relevant public feedback on policy decisions.
- Examples of use:
- The recent "Transgender Teachers in Religious Schools" debate – THE-DDU would have provided instant feedback to help the government make informed choices with public support data.
- THE-DDU will outperform traditional polling (e.g., Morgan, Garrett, The Age, Nelson) that typically survey only 1,500–3,000 people and are often inaccurate on major issues.
CANDIDATE PAGE
- Election time is confusing! Many Australians don’t recognise candidates' names on the ballot paper.
- A Candidate Page will offer mini-profiles of all candidates for federal and state elections, making it easier for voters to make informed choices.
POLICY PAGES WITH COMPARISONS
- Australians often care about only a few key policies that influence their vote.
- The app will outline major policies from all parties in an easy-to-compare format.
- Example: Click "IMMIGRATION"
- One Nation: Supports the current policy.
- Liberal Party: New proposal. (Link to full policy)
- Labor Party: Still under discussion.
- United Australia Party: "We need a bigger boat."
- This ensures clarity, fairness, and transparency for voters.
REAL NEWS – JUST THE FACTS
- THE-DDU will hire an independent political reporter to summarise key events in Parliament.
- No bias, no spin – just weekly insights, highlights, and press releases.
DID YOU KNOW… / WHAT DO YOU THINK… PAGE
- The app will display collected data to show the government real-time public sentiment on issues.
- Results will reflect Australians’ opinions across different demographics (e.g., youth, seniors, workers, unemployed, various cultural groups).
- This will pressure politicians to acknowledge real public concerns.
CROWD-FUNDING PAGE
- Australians helping Australians!
- A dedicated space for raising funds for national issues like natural disasters, droughts, fires, Indigenous concerns, and environmental causes.
- Example: In 2013/14, the Victorian Government euthanised 686 koalas due to cost concerns about relocation—something Australians could have stepped in to prevent with crowdfunding.
THE-DDU MONTHLY SUMMARY PAGE
- A monthly roundup of who’s doing what in government.
DDU MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION PAGE
- Full sign-up. Free for all Australians.
ADOPTABILITY
- All the information THE-DDU provides is already available to the public under Australia’s Privacy Act—this app just makes it more accessible.
- THE-DDU will be a centralised hub for political education, engagement, and direct democracy.
- MPs will have a public platform to communicate directly with the electorate, free from media influence.
THE-DDU IS NOT A POLITICAL PARTY.
- If we give the public a real voice and make them feel heard, engagement will grow.
- Seeing real-time results and demographic insights will make Australians more educated, involved, and informed.
- This platform will enable democracy to flourish like never before!
